30 tips and tricks for Windows 7
1. Manage windows
You probably saw that Windows 7 much easier to manage windows: you can now stick to the window left or right side of the screen simply by moving it to the edge. In addition, you can move the window to the top of the screen to maximize it, and double-click on the top or bottom of the window to maximize it vertically. These actions are available on shortcut keys also:
- WinKey + Left Arrow and WinKey + Right Arrow = sticks
- WinKey + Up Arrow and WinKey + Down Arrow = maximizes and restores / minimizes
- WinKey + Shift + Up Arrow and WinKey + Shift + Down Arrow = maximizes vertically
The function of the window stick on each side is very valuable in widescreen monitors: it makes the old feel of Windows to organize them manually by context menus become very "painful."
2. Projector Screen
Are you tired of having to use third-party utilities to send the image of your notebook in an external projector? So it's likely that you will be very happy to know that the projection image is something quick and simple in Windows 7. Just press WinKey + R and you will see the following pop-up:
Configuration: View desktop only on the computer screen
Use the arrow keys (or keep pressing WinKey + R) to switch between the views cloned (image displayed on the monitor and projector or external monitor), "extended" (use the display of the machine with the outside) or "just external. You can also access the application by displayswitch.exe (look to the Start menu).
If you want more control over presentation settings, you can still press WinKey + X to open the Windows Mobility Center, which allows you to set up a presentation "modular", where your IM program will not disrupt, screensavers are disabled and a plan neutral background is defined (Note: this tool is also present in Windows Vista).
3. Avoiding clutter
Working with a document in one window and want to get rid of all the other background? Just press WinKey + Home to minimize all windows not active in the background, preserving only the window you are currently using in the same position. To return as it was, press the key combination again to restore the windows that were the background to their original locations.
4. Managing windows in multiple monitors
The first hint on the window management, shown as "stick" windows on the monitor. A derivation of these shortcuts can be used when you have more than one monitor. Use WinKey + Shift + Left Arrow andWinKey + Shift + Right Arrow to move the window from one monitor to another - and keep them in the same relative location (left or right) monitor origin.
5. Keyboard shortcuts instead of power toys
One of the most popular Windows XP was the "Open Command Prompt Here", which allowed the User to use the graphical shell to navigate the file system and then use the context menu to open the command prompt in the current directory . Windows 7 (and in Windows Vista - although many do not know), you can simply hold the shift key while you right-click (context menu) to have the option to appear. If the directory is on the network, it will automatically map a drive letter for you.
6. A Windows "globalized"
If you have tried to change the wallpaper, you probably noticed that there is a set of wallpapers corresponding to the location that you selected when you installed Windows. In fact, there are several packages installed wallpapers based on the language you choose, but there are other hidden in a directory. If you want to check out the scenery, just navigate to C: Windows GlobalizationMCT and see the series of images in separate directories corresponding to different regions. Just double-click the theme file in the same directory to display the images defined rotation to that country.
7. The recorder problems Windows
Every developer wants a feature that makes it easier to explain problems of software, for example. It is often difficult to detect any problem with the software developed without a step-by-step how the problem occurs.Windows 7 is there to solve this problem! Diagnostic tools that Windows 7 uses for the comments on the product - the famous Send Feedback - provide a simple tool for recording screen that generates a step-by-step that the User did. After stopping the recording, the recorder saves all problems in an HTML file in ZIP compressed, with a sort of slideshow of steps. It's a really cool tool. The program can be called by psr.exe or in Control Panel (Control Panel) in Record steps to reproduce the problem (write a step-by-step instructions to reproduce a problem).

8. Installing fonts
We got rid of the Add Fonts dialog, which has faithfully served the Windows in the last twenty years. Of course, all this time he became more and more forgotten - the easiest way to install fonts was simply dragging them to the Fonts folder via Control Panel. But now the installation of a source is really easy - has added a "Install" button in the viewer sources:
You can install fonts in Windows 7 for window display source
There are also many other new features built into Windows 7, which will satisfy some users, the ability to hide sources based on regional settings, the new rendering engine and text DirectWrite a new dialog that allows selection of four 'weights "to a source.
New dialog font allows more than 4 "weights" for a source
9. Gabriola
Windows 7 includes the source Gabriola, prepared by Tire Typeworks that takes advantage of the OpenType standard to provide a variety of decorative sets of fonts:
Some examples of variations of the source Gabriola
10. What is making my browser slow?
If you think that Internet Explorer is taking too long to load a page, it's worth taking a look at the add-ons that you installed. One of the most useful tools introduced in Internet Explorer 8 has a feature that shows the startup time of each add-on. Just click on Tools> Manage Add-ons (Tools> Manage Add-ons) and see the loading time in the right hand column of the list. Office 2007, for example, you can install an add-on that you never use, but is there to consume system resources. And it's easy to disable it: just click right and go to Disable (Off).
11. Arranging the taskbar
You may not know that the new icons in the taskbar are not fixed in place. You can rearrange them to suit your needs. So, you can start the first five icons (from left to right) by pressing WinKey + 1, WinKey + 2, WinKey + 3, etc..
What is less known is still the ability to drag icons from the system tray, and thus can organize in your order, or move them inside and outside the popup window, where are the hidden icons. It is the easiest way to customize your system to show the things you want, anywhere you want.
12. Installing from a USB device
Last year saw the emergence of various netbooks on the market, most of them with Linux and Windows XP.No to Vista, probably due to the "weight" of the system, but with the possible upgrades in netbooks, several people came to install the new Microsoft operating system on their netbooks, but there was one problem: it needed a DVD drive, which the Most netbooks do not have, making it necessary for your installation. With Windows 7, it will get easier. Just format a USB storage device to FAT32 and copy the contents of the installation of Windows 7 in its interior, using the command "xcopy e: f: / e / f" (where e: is your DVD drive where the Install DVD, ef: USB device). An advantage also is that the installation from a USB device is much faster than the traditional.
What's more, it is also important to note that Windows 7 is much better for netbooks than Windows Vista, as it has less memory consumption, and deals much better with solid state drives or SSD (Solid State Disk), since For example, defragmentation is disabled by becoming unnecessary, and the way that Windows deletes the files is different, adapting better to the shape of solid discs.
13. I want the Quick Launch back!
You, old and faithful to the quick launch bar, may have noticed that not only is off by default in Windows 7, as it is really missing from the list of toolbars. It may seem obvious, but the concept of having a set of shortcut icons fixed now integrated directly into the new taskbar. Based on the first graphical interfaces tested, we believe that the vast majority of users will be very happy with the new model. But if you want the old Quick Launch back, know that the old shortcuts are all there yet. To reactivate it, do the following:
- Right-click the taskbar, choose Toolbars (Toolbar) / New Toolbar (New Bar);
- In the dialog to select folder, enter the following text (without quotation marks) and press OK: "%userprofile% AppDataRoamingMicrosoftInternet ExplorerQuick Launch";
- Disable the option to lock the taskbar, and click the right button on the tab. Make sure that "Show text" (show text) and "Show title" (show title) are off and the view set to "Small icons" (small icons);
- Use the tabs to rearrange the toolbar ordering your choice, and then block the same again.
14. Jump lists
Much has been made of jump lists, use the Windows 7 that allows applications such as Windows Live Messenger offer a list of useful tasks. These jump lists can be accessed by clicking right on the taskbar. But there is another way to access this feature: Click the left button and drag up. This was especially made for touchscreen devices like the computer all-in-one HP Touchsmart.
15. Support OpenDocument and OOXML
All reviews of Windows 7 highlights the redesigned interface WordPad and Paint, who now use the Office-like interface Ribbon to highlight their features. Few, however, noted a very interesting new feature: WordPad can now read and write files in both Office Open XML, compatible with Word 2007, such as OpenDocument, supported by Sun and IBM.

16. Taskbar in Windows Vista style
Several people were not exactly fans of superba Windows 7 when it was introduced in the early builds. As it was changed slightly to get Windows 7 public beta, many have "converted" and now prefer the new look, especially those who open many windows simultaneously. However, there are even those who prefer the taskbar in the style of Windows Vista, and the good news is that you can easily customize the toolbar so that it looks like the old version:
The taskbar in Windows 7 may be configured so that it appears to Windows Vista
To use this look, click the right button on the taskbar, and go to Properties (Properties). In the window that opens, select the Use small icons (Use small icons), and Taskbar buttons (buttons on the taskbar), select Combine when taskbar is full (Combine when the taskbar is full).
17. Aero Peek
When you see the taskbar, you may notice a few things, like the little rectangle at the bottom right: this is the feature called Aero Peek, which lets you see gadgets or icons on your desktop (something like the Show Desktop work). Is there a keyboard shortcut that does the same thing: WinKey + Spacebar.
18. Applications with more rights
Want to quickly run a program on the taskbar with administrator permissions? It's easy - click the program icon while pressing Ctrl + Shift, and you will immediately open it with full rights (assuming that your User has permissions to do this, of course!).
19. A little more of the same, please
If you already have an application open on your desktop (command prompt, for example), and plans to open a second instance of the same application, you do not need to go back to the Start menu. Just hold down the Shift key while clicking the program icon and you will open a new instance of the application instead of switching to it. For those who prefer the mouse, simply press the same time, the icon, the middle button (scroll) with the third mouse button (right).
20. A different way to switch between windows
Another feature that many advanced users will enjoy is the ability to make a kind of "Alt + Tab" between windows belonging to the same application. For example, if you have ten chat windows Windows Live Messenger open, you can switch between these windows Windows Live Messenger: just hold down the Ctrlkey while you click the icon for Windows Live Messenger clustered. It is easier to do than press Alt + Tab and try to guess what the small image that corresponds to the chat window of your contact.
21. Walking through the taskbar
Another shortcut "secret" Windows: Press WinKey + T to move the focus to the taskbar. When the focus is on them, simply use the arrow keys to select a particular window or a group of windows and press Enter to run or turn. You can exit by Esc key I do not know exactly why this happened, but I assume that the shortcut was added for accessibility. However, it is also useful for advanced users - another reason for developers to be careful to ensure that your code is accessible.
22. A tip widescreen
Virtually all monitors sold today with desktops and laptops are widescreen. When you try to watch DVDs or view this format work in widescreen, often think that is a bit "squeezed" vertically.
As a result, the first thing that some do when configuring a new computer, you put the taskbar to the left of the screen. I can imagine why they did not put it by default - just imagine the complaints by businesses that need reensinar employees - but there is no reason for you to suffer from the preset time when the average screen resolution was 800 × 600.
In the past, Windows did not work so fine for people who like the taskbar side. Sure, you could move the taskbar to one side, but it was kind of weird - the gradients were wrong, the Start menu was "stupid" and you felt like a second class citizen. The taskbar in Windows 7 seem to have been designed to be used vertically - the icons work well, tricks, shortcuts mentioned above, as WinKey + T as well, which automatically changes the left arrow and right arrow to arrow and down arrow. Best of all is that you have a better place to enjoy on your screen.
Try! In particular, if you have a netbook with a screen resolution of 1024 × 600, just enjoy the extra space for browsing the Internet. On the first day you will be lost, but then probably will "convert" to an enthusiast of this "technical".
23. Attach your favorite folders
If you are always working on the same four or five folders, you can fix them easily in the jump list of Windows Explorer on the taskbar. Click and drag the folder icon in Windows Explorer Superbar and it will automatically set in the jump list of Explorer.
24. Make Windows Explorer open the "My Computer"
If you spend more time moving files out of folders in Windows documents than within them, you might want to change the home directory in Windows Explorer to your computer.
"My Computer" in Windows Explorer
To do this, open the start menu and look for the entry of Windows Explorer (in the Accessories folder). Edit the properties and change the path (Target) to:% SystemRoot% explorer.exe / root,:: (20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D)
If you want the changes to take effect on the icon on the taskbar, you need to unpin and then refixation (Unpin and repin) icon. It is important to remember that the shortcut WinKey + E will open Windows Explorer folder of documents, there is still no way to change that.
25. Tunando ClearType and calibrated colors on screen
If you want to adjust your monitor to view the image or text, we have integrated tools to do so. It's amazing how these tools make the difference: often dark a little more power and adjusting the range correctly, the monitor looks much better than before. You can do this on your TV high-definition 42-inch just bought. But why not make the computer that you use every day?
Access these tools by looking at the start of cttune.exe and dccw.exe, respectively, or directly from the Control Panel.
26. Burning ISO images
You can double-click on an ISO image to CD or DVD and you will see an applet appears on your screen. It will allow you to burn the image into a blank media. Enough utilities shareware and other software from dubious confidence!
27. Windows Movie Maker
Windows 7 does not include software for video editing - it was moved to the Windows Live Essentials package, which contains the Mail, Photo Gallery and Messenger. Unfortunately, Windows Live Movie Maker, for being in beta, still with few functions (the folks at Microsoft are working on it). The best solution from Microsoft that exists today is Windows Movie Maker 2.6, which is basically the same used in Windows XP.Missing transitions and effects in Windows Vista, and does not support editing HD video. But it is quite functional for home videos.
Windows Movie Maker 2.6 is compatible with Windows 7
Download Windows Movie Maker 2.6 here.
28. Hide the icon in Windows Live Messenger
Probably the first action to finish installing the Windows 7 was to install the application package Windows Live Essentials. If not, you're not taking full advantage of the experience of Windows User. If you are a Power User in Windows Live Messenger, you probably loved the jump list that allows you to change the status and send message to someone, all this easily:
Windows Live Messenger appears by default on the taskbar
On the other hand, you may prefer to keep the Windows Live Messenger in the system tray, as in other versions. To do this, close Windows Live Messenger and edit the shortcut's properties, configuring the application to run in compatibility mode with Windows Vista. Bingo!
29. Enjoy the fish
I'm surprised how few people realized the subtle joke with the fish Siamese that is part of the wallpaper pattern, therefore, I will do my part and keep the secret. Look for clues in the Wikipedia.
30. When all else fails ...
There are always those situations are not very good - the system did not start correctly, you want something where you can quickly access the command prompt to resolve the problem properly. Windows 7 now includes a tool that allows you to create a disc to repair the system, which is a bootable CD that includes the command prompt, and a suite of system tools. Just type "system repair disc" in the search bar of the Start menu and you will go to the utility.
